'Eco-Friendly Paper Desiccant' Supply as a Replacement for Silica Gel
Recently, Yui Shining (CEO Lim Ji-sung), known as a company specializing in eco-friendly living products and fashion materials, launched the 'Eco-Friendly Paper Desiccant', accelerating the steps of a small and medium-sized enterprise that promotes Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance (ESG) while protecting and sustaining the environment.

Yui Shining has developed natural paper desiccants under the 'Yui' brand as a replacement for harmful silica gel desiccants and is supplying them to mid-sized fashion companies, following the development of 'Shine Biodegradable Tape' and 'Shine Biodegradable Fabric' made from existing biodegradable yarns.
The 'Yui' eco-friendly desiccant is made from plant fibers, ensuring it is non-toxic, harmless to the human body, and does not cause environmental pollution.
This product is environmentally friendly, decomposing 100%, and its packaging is also made from wood pulp fiber paper bags, making it fully biodegradable. In particular, the 'Yui' desiccant changes from a hard state to a soft one when it absorbs moisture, allowing the moisture absorption state to be confirmed, and it has the advantage of not releasing any content, unlike silica gel, when the desiccant packaging is damaged.

In the case of existing silica gel desiccants, their transparent glassy texture makes it difficult to check the desiccation state, so about 3-5% of blue silica gel is mixed during packaging to make this easily identifiable, and when it begins to retain about 25% moisture, the color changes.
Silica gel is primarily dyed with cobalt chloride or methyl violet; cobalt chloride changes from blue to pink, while methyl violet changes from orange to green, indicating the moisture absorption state.
In Europe, the manufacture and distribution of products utilizing this has begun to be banned (EU Directive 98/99/EC revision), and the FDA in the United States is recommending not to use silica gel that does not decompose in soil for food or pharmaceuticals.
Particularly upon disposal, it causes very serious pollution to the soil environment due to its strong acidity, and most importantly, it has the issue of a leaching phenomenon, where it releases back absorbed moisture when it reaches its moisture capacity limit.
Moreover, excessive use of calcium chloride as a raw material for desiccants also has significant impacts on plants and animals. In 2010, there was an incident in South Korea where trees in orchards near roads died after desiccants were sprayed, resulting in a ruling that the Korea Highway Corporation must compensate. Research conducted by the National Institute of Industrial Science from 2005 to 2011 also proved that calcium chloride damages trees.
Zeolite desiccants are used as natural desiccants, but they have the disadvantage of being sold at more than six times the price of silica gel desiccants.
Yui Shining is supplying this paper desiccant in two types: 1 gram (32mm x 46mm) and 3 grams (60mm x 60mm).
CEO Lim Ji-sung of Yui Shining added, "Paper desiccants have been used in cleaning for over 7-8 years, taking the lead in using eco-friendly materials, and consultations with other mid-sized fashion companies are actively taking place. Yui Shining is committed to becoming a company focused on eco-friendly living products, replacing products used in everyday life with eco-friendly materials and concentrating on new developments."
