Is Silica Gel a Regulated Substance?

Yes, silica gel is subject to regulations depending on its application and the region of import.
In the European Union, silica gel is treated as a chemical substance under the REACH regulation (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals). Importing silica gel into the EU requires registration, evaluation, and potential authorization through an accredited body within the region. This process can be lengthy, and even if the substance passes all required tests, all imported quantities are subject to traceability under REACH compliance.
In the United States, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) regulates chemical substances used in food and pharmaceuticals. Therefore, if silica gel is intended for use in food packaging, dietary supplements, or pharmaceuticals, it must comply with FDA regulations. This includes safety evaluations, reviews, and inquiries before approval for market use.
With increasing global attention on environmental regulations, there is growing concern over the use of non-biodegradable materials such as silica gel. As a result, companies pursuing eco-friendly policies are beginning to explore the possibility of replacing silica gel with biodegradable desiccants.

Why Are Developed Countries Moving to Regulate Silica Gel?

There appear to be three main reasons why developed nations are increasingly considering regulations on silica gel.

Unsustainable

Key Reasons for Silica Gel Regulation:
Non-biodegradability leading to human health risks, environmental damage, and unsustainable use.

Who Are You, Silica Gel?

Among the three most commonly used desiccants, silica gel is the most widely used. Why? Because it offers excellent moisture absorption at a competitive price.
It’s also highly versatile, making it a go-to choice across many applications. In short, it’s a cost-effective and practical solution for moisture control.
That’s why many companies may not have directly experienced any problems using silica gel, and why most businesses still continue to use it today.

Are You Aware of the Mandatory ESG Disclosure Requirements?

Companies that use silica gel should take note of an important regulatory shift: the mandatory ESG disclosure framework.
Starting in 2024–2025, countries like the EU and Australia will begin requiring companies to publicly disclose their ESG-related activities, in addition to traditional financial reporting. This move will form the foundational financial infrastructure for addressing climate challenges.
So, what about other major countries, including South Korea?
Japan is set to implement ESG disclosure requirements in 2025,
The United States and South Korea plan to roll them out gradually between 2025 and 2026.
As a result, large corporations are already beginning to develop concrete ESG strategies and implement them across operations.
While these regulations alone won’t directly ban the use of silica gel, they are likely to drive companies to re-evaluate their materials—starting with areas that are easiest to act on within ESG frameworks. Change will likely begin in these practical, actionable spaces.

So, is there an alternative?

What if there were a product that outperforms silica gel in moisture absorption, solves the environmental concerns mentioned above, and still remains cost-effective?
Dehume’s paper-based desiccant is just that alternative.
Made primarily from pulp, it is produced through a process of compression and high-temperature sterilization, resulting in an eco-friendly solution that aligns with modern sustainability goals.
With superior moisture control and cost efficiency, Dehume’s paper desiccant is a smart, sustainable alternative to conventional silica gel.

Is There More We Can Look Forward To?

Have you heard of the term “meaning out”?
“Meaning out” refers to the act of expressing one’s political or social beliefs through consumption choices. This growing trend of value-driven consumption goes beyond simply choosing eco-friendly products. Today’s consumers actively voice their values to companies—demanding that those values be reflected in the products they buy. In doing so, they are reshaping the way products are developed and how brands operate.
According to a consumer environmental perception survey by the Korea Consumer Agency, 82% of 1,000 respondents said they are willing to purchase eco-friendly products. Their top reasons were the ability to contribute to environmental protection and help future generations.
With this trend in mind, the demand for value-conscious consumers and brands that produce sustainable products is expected to grow even further.
If you agree with this direction, you’ll see that Dehume’s products are not only functional and sustainable — they can also enhance your brand image in the eyes of today’s ethically minded consumers.
